Department of Special Education
Welcome to our
website! Our staff of almost 2,000 work with general education staff
to provide students with special learning needs appropriate services
in the least restrictive environment. Approximately 13,000 students,
10 percent of the total student body, currently receive special
education services. If you believe your child may have learning
needs that require special education services, contact your child's
teacher or other school staff. A multidisciplinary team or MDT, with
the parent as a member, will determine whether special education
services are needed. To find out more about the special education
process, click on the topics listed on the blue bar.
The mission
of Prince George's County Public Schools is to ensure that all
students acquire knowledge and develop skills and understandings
that will enable them to become productive citizens and lifelong
learners in a technological, diverse society.
This mission is
accomplished by identifying and nurturing strong instructional
leadership; establishing high expectations for all students,
parents, teachers, staff, and administrators; implementing a
rigorous, technology-infused curriculum; emphasizing effective
learning strategies for students at all performance levels;
maintaining a safe and orderly school environment; monitoring
students’ progress, resulting in appropriate adjustments to
instructional programs; developing high levels of accountability;
and cultivating meaningful family and community involvement.
