The Prince George's County Public
Schools (PGCPS) provides a continuum of services designed to meet
the needs of students with disabilities. The majority of students
eligible for special education services receive them in their base
school. Students in need of more intensive services may receive them
in a program outside the base school.
Identification Process
for Special Education Services
Children Birth to Three Years of Age.
Once a child is referred for an evaluation, a service coordinator
is assigned to help coordinate the assessment with the family. If the child is
eligible, an Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) is developed.
The Infant/Toddler Program's telephone number is (301) 567-8642.
Children Three to Five Years of Age.
Once a disability is identified and eligibility is established by
the preschool multidisciplinary team (MDT), the child's file is forwarded to an
Early Childhood Center for development of an Individualized Education Program (IEP). The
Early Childhood Office can be reached at (301) 808-2722.
School-Age Students.
The base school's MDT reviews all available information on each
referral, including observations by school staff and test reports shared by
parents. Other information is gathered if the team determines that additional
psychological, medical, or educational evaluations are needed. Once a disability
is determined and eligibility established, the MDT which includes parents, uses
the information to develop an Individualized Education Program (IEP). The parent
must provide consent for the initial IEP before special education services
begin. Contact the Department of Special Education for further information:
