BOARD OF EDUCATION ADOPTS OVERSIGHT POLICY
New Policy Communicates Roles and Responsibilities
The Prince George’s County Board of Education adopted a “Systems Oversight”
policy last night during its Board meeting. The new policy establishes a formal direction
for monitoring all major operations throughout Prince George's County Public Schools.
By unanimous vote in favor of the policy, the Board of Education also clarified the roles
of the Board and the Superintendent.
“The Board of Education is committed to its mission of advancing the achievement of
its diverse student body through community engagement, sound policy governance,
accountability, and fiscal management,” said Board Chair Verjeana M. Jacobs, Esq.
“The oversight policy communicates to the public how the Board and the
Superintendent work together to achieve our mission.”
“Systems oversight” is the role of the Board of Education in its review of the
performance of all operations throughout the school system. The review will be through
formal reports, audits and all reporting methods deemed appropriate by the Board
through the Superintendent. Systems oversight will include reporting on goals,
balanced score card measures, value added, and level of service provided.
The areas covered include, but are not limited to:
Finance, Human Resources,Operations and Supporting Services, and
Information Systems.Systems oversight by the Board of Education will occur through regularly scheduled
System Oversight meetings as outlined in policy 0120. The results of System Oversight
meetings will be used in the Superintendent’s goal setting and evaluation, in compliance
with Board Policy 8265 on Superintendent evaluation.
Board of Education Members and the Superintendent understand that systems
oversight is the responsibility of the Board of Education, as a whole, and not that of
individual Board Members. All Board policies can be accessed online at
