Dear Parents & Guardians,

It is vital that we provide a safe and orderly environment in which students may travel to and from school each day.  Recently, it has been brought to our attention that several students have made it difficult for the bus driver to transport children to and from school without giving constant reminders to talk softly, remain seated, always respect the driver and other students, as well as not rough house with one another.  We have begun to receive a number of bus referrals pertaining to our students and want to make every effort to provide each child with the opportunity to demonstrate positive and appropriate behaviors.

We are aware that these behaviors are limited to a few individuals, but feel it is important to advise all parents/guardians of the recent behavior issues.   Please review positive behaviors and manners that should be demonstrated while riding a school bus with your child.  Remind them of their responsibility as a bus rider, as well as the importance of following all rules and procedures while riding their bus.  If they are successfully doing their part, praise them for their efforts.

If a student continues to display negative behavior, bus drivers will complete a Bus Referral on the child.  This form documents recurring problems and will be submitted to our office.  At which time, an administrator will speak with the individual and go over appropriate alternatives.  A copy of the referral will be sent home for the parent/guardian to retain. Upon receiving three (3) bus referrals, it may be necessary to:

1.     Suspend bus riding for a period of time (To be determined by Principal)

2.     Serve recess in office

3.     Hold an Administrator-student conference

4.     Arrange to meet with parent and student to discuss concerns

We are confident that our students are able to represent themselves in a respectful manner.  We appreciate any support from our parents/guardians and value your time and efforts.  If you have any questions, please contact our office at 301-497-3994.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Nicole R. Dorn-Pekins
