What's New at Suitland High School?

"Out of the Past, Into the Future"

Suitand Center for the Visual & Performing Arts 1990

“Out of the Past, Into the Future” is an exhibition of work created by the alumni of the visual arts program at Suitland High School Center for Visual and Performing Arts. The program was started in 1986 as part of the new magnet school program “Schools of Choice” and has been operating successfully since that time. Students graduating from the program have consistently been accepted to the major art colleges and universities in the country, many receiving large scholarships and grants. All of the work in the exhibition has been completed since their graduation, some by students that graduated as recently as 2007, and others as long ago as 1990, our first graduating class.

The experience of the group is varied. Some graduates have gone on to become very successful fine artists exhibiting at major galleries and museums, and others have become very successful in the commercial field of art, working for major corporations and businesses as well as freelancing.

Although not all of the students have continued their careers in art, they do continue to produce works of art for themselves. Some for personal reasons have decided to keep art as a means of escape or meditation, as an avocation rather than a vocation. They have gone on after graduation to become attorneys, medical professionals and entrepreneurs. Some have chosen to come back to Prince Georges County after their post secondary education to teach and to give back to the community that nurtured them and allowed them to pursue their dreams of working in the field of art. They all have become a source of pride for the program and an inspiration to both the faculty and students at the Center for the Arts. After twenty two years of teaching in the program I feel fortunate to be able to present this work to the public.

All works have been donated by the artists and are for sale and will be available at auction on April 26, 5:00-7:00 pm at the reception for the exhibition. Proceeds from the show will go to the Suitland Center for the Visual and Performing Arts, Visual Art Department.

Winterfest 2007

Two times each year, The Center for the Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) celebrates the extraordinary talents of its students through a series of concerts and performances that showcase each department's artistry and rigor.

Throughout the school year, our students rely on your patience and understanding as they take advantage of the many wonderful opportunities that come their way. In our case it truly does take a village. Please join us in celebrating our young artists' academic and artistic achievement by attending at least one concert. By the way, more than 50% of CVPA students are currently on honor roll.

This season we'll have something for everyone. Bring the little ones this Friday, December 7th, to the "Children's Theatre", the first performance of the season by the Theatre Department. Click here to view flyer with the full performance schedule for the next two weeks. Download a copy of the Winterfest 2007 full color program here.

VPA Students Meet Faith Ringgold

Students from The Center for the Visual & Performing Arts attended the 2007 National Visionary Leadership Project (NVLP) Wisdom Awards and Intergenerational Summit on the State of Black America.  The event founded by Ms. Renee Poussaint and Dr. Camille Cosby was held at the Library of Congress Coolidge Auditorium Tuesday, October 16, 2007.  Our own Stefan
