Aerospace Science Curriculum

The Air Force Junior ROTC program is a series of self - development courses that focus on an individual developing the attitude, poise, confidence, and qualities necessary to become an effective leader in today's society. The academic emphasis is focused on providing a well - rounded education in history, technical aspects, application, and career opportunities of aerospace science. THESE COURSES ARE NOT DESIGNED TO RECRUIT ANY CADET INTO THE UNITED STATES AIR FORCE, BUT IS DESIGNED TO BUILD BETTER CITIZENS FOR AMERICA.

Aerospace Science 1 ( AS -1 ): First - Year Enrolled

This course is for incoming Surrattsville High School Freshman. AS -1 is designed to provide a course of instruction for the successful transition of Freshman into high school and for their motivation to achieve success throughout their high school experience and beyond. The course strives to develop in each cadet a positive self - image, self - confidence, motivation, and a positive attitude towards learning.  Individual guidance and direction are provided from the instructors with an emphasis on developing attitudes and study skills that will enable each cadet to make the high school experience a success. JROTC uses the concept that total human growth and development embodies the aspects of mind, body, and spirit, and that it is the cadet's responsibility to develop and learn these ideas. The leadership education portion of this course concentrates on learning the follower skills, leadership qualities, team development, conflict resolution, military customs and courtesies, and a strong emphasis on developing personal core values of integrity, service before self ,and excellence in all you do. One day a week is devoted to the practical application of Cadet Wing duties and responsibilities.

Aerospace Science 2 ( AS - 2 ): Second - Year Enrolled

The AS - 2 academic course places emphasis on AS -1 objectives, but it also incorporates aviation material as well as leadership techniques.  It uses the AFJROTC Aerospace Science Text : " The Heritage of Flight" to bring focus the historical evolution of Aerospace Science as a major instrument of national power. The cadets receive a technology education credit upon satisfactory completion of AS - 2.  The Leadership Education portion of this course concentrates on the transition from a study of  " how to be a follower" to the qualities a good citizenship and leadership emphasizing communicate skills; understanding of self; group effectiveness; team dynamics; leadership principles; qualities; and values. One day a week is devoted to the application of Wing Activities.

Aerospace Science 3 ( AS - 3 ): Third - Year Enrolled

This course introduces the concepts of aviation, human requirements of flight, the principals of aircraft flight, and air navigation. The knowledge that is learned through the curriculum on the AS - 3 level,  " informs" desiring cadets of information that will be useful in Aviation Ground School.  The text for this course is the " Exploration of Space".  In addition to learning concepts of aviation, the cadet will also acquire knowledge on space environment and programs. The cadet's previous instructor must recommend the cadet before being promoted to AS - 3 level. This course also applies Leadership Education to the cadets. Emphasis is placed upon the development of resumes and career plans along with personal finance and stress management.  The leadership portion of the AS - 3 level is intense consisting of physical training, leadership tactical training, and military customs and courtesies. Leadership education concentrates on the development of management skills, management techniques, and TIME MANAGEMENT. One day a week is devoted to Cadet Wing Activities.

Aerospace Science 4 ( AS - 4 ) : Fourth - Year Enrolled

A cadet's last year in Air Force Junior ROTC will be their most challenging year. This year, the cadet will not be in the classroom environment at all. He or She will be totally engrossed in advanced leadership techniques, as well as preparing to proceed on to higher education. There is no text for the AS - 4 course, but the cadets will be responsible for turning in ASI tasked lesson plans, and completing daily grades for their subordinating cadets.
