The Center for Visual & Performing Arts challenges students to develop their their technical skills, personal confidence, discipline, and critical thinking skills while exploring the arts. Students eventually major in one of four principle concentrations: music, dance, theatre, and visual arts. Students prepare for acceptance to a university art program or a professional school of art while completing a challenging concentration of academic work that meets the Maryland State graduation requirements. In addition, a strong association with the arts in the Washington, D.C. area offers distinct advantages. Students study with profess- ional artists, dancers, actors, musicians, singers, directors/producers, and radio and television personalities.
Audition Process
• The dance audition consists of a class with approximately 10 students.
The class covers ballet, modern and jazz techniques.
• Dancers are assessed on the basis of these techniques as well as, natural
flexibility, strength, endurance, coordination, ability to pick up and remember
steps and musicality.
• After the brief class, each student will perform a one to two minute
dance, which is choreographed by the student or someone else prior to the
audition. Students should be in dance attire and bring their own dance music
on CD or tape. The audition class process lasts about one hour.
