April 25, 2008.  Math Fun Day!  All sorts of games based upon mathematics were brought into our cafeteria by Mrs. Lopez, and every class got a chance to come in and play.  Who knew math could be fun?

Strategy and foresight are needed to play Connect 4.

Students test their skills at Chess.

Mrs. Lipford tries her hand at Jenga.

Our new mobile computer lab came in handy, as students found there are many web-based math games.

Soma cubes and other geometric shapes make interesting puzzles.

Mrs. Lopez learns the rules of Blokus.

April 22, 2008.  The Day of One Thousand Tulips.  We dedicated our new tulip garden, with all the tulips in full bloom.  See our Tulip Page for more pictures.

It was a cool and cloudy day, but everyone came outside to listen to Mr. B. speak.

Mr. Baudoin and our honored guests uncovered the dedication plaque.

Ms. Kwon had taught the children a song about welcoming spring!  The whole school sang!

More Pictures of the dedication ceremony.

April 18.  Career Day!  Each year our school counselor, Ms. McCalla invites people who work in many different professions to come and talk to our students. -- newspaper reporter to city councilman, fireman and paramedic, architect, soldier, police chief, and many more.

A mariachi singer fascinates Ms. Hull's first grade class, as he shows him his instruments, his costume, and performs for them.

A videographer talks to Ms. Holmes's fifth grade class, as he puts them all on television!

Ms. Nay's Kindergarten class gets to go inside a Metro Bus!

Mrs. Lopez's third grade listens to the firemen explain about their job.

The K-9 police showed students what their highly-trained dogs can do.

An entomologist talks to the children about insects.

April 12.  Planting of the Tulip Grove Peace Tree.  See the article the Bowie Blade wrote about our Peace Tree Initiative.

Mrs. Lopez speaks to the entire school before the planting

The Gold Committee ceremoniously shovels dirt on the tree.

Our Peace Tree, standing right outside the front door of Tulip Grove, symbolozies our hopes for the future

(Thanks to Adam Schwartz, for digging the hole for the Peace Tree and mulching around the front gardens.)

February 29.  Celebrating Dr. Seuss's birthday with our annual Read-In Night.

Ms Hull read Falling for Rapunzel by Leah Wilcox

and our students listen intently.

Mrs. Roth reads animal stories.

January 29.  Mr. Barnes and the band practice.

Getting ready,

listening to instructions,

And finally playing!

January 25.  2nd quarter Honor Roll Assembly.   Many parents came as third grade through fifth graders receive their certificates for Principal's Honor Roll (all As), Honor Roll (all As and Bs) or Citizenship (an A in social skills and an A or B in work habits).  Seven students were especially honored for Outstanding Improvement; they improved their grades by at least one letter grade in at least FOUR subject areas.  Afterwards, all students who had received certificates were treated to a pizza snack.

Mr. Baudoin and Mr. Creek tell each student "Good Work," as they hand them their certificate.

Students from Mrs. Parr's class have their moment in the limelight, showing off their certificates.

And afterwards, students and parents enjoy pizza together.

January 22.  All of our second through fifth grade students are playing First in Math!  Each week, the trophy goes to the class that earned the most points that week.  Mrs. Holt's 2nd grade won for the second time on January 14; Mrs. Gilbert's class won for the week of January 22.

Mrs. Holt holds the trophy in December.

2nd graders Cooper, Kyla, Jake, and Elijah have all earned bracelets playing First in Math.

December 7.  After reading a biography of Wilson Bentley, two third grade students carefully turn the pages of a first edition of his book, Snow Crystals, in the school library.  Bentley's photographs of snowflakes, taken in the late 1800s and early 1900s, proved that snowflakes have six sides, and that no two are alike.  Thanks to the U.S. Naval Academy library for loaning us the copy of Snow Crystals, published in 1931.

Visit
www.snowflakebentley.com
to learn more about Bentley and http://www.snowflakebentley.com/snowflakes.htm

and the orchestra in the concert.

The chorus, under the direction of Ms. Kwon, sang.

November 20 2007.  A Thanksgiving Feast

Parents set up a wonderful feast in the cafeteria for kindergartners and pre-K students.

Dressed in pilgrim hats and American Indian headdresses, the student enjoy lunch.

They designed their placemats themselves.

First graders ate their Thanksgiving feast in their classrooms.  Turkey, potatoes, and pie!

Ms. Hull's class's placemats tell what they are thankful for.

Mr. Baudoin was invited to enjoy a piece of pie with the students.

November 15, 2007 was Chicken Day at Tulip Grove school.  Mr. B. promised!  And he keeps his word.  He said if we sold over 750 items in the school fundraiser he'd dress up as a chicken for the day.  And here he is!  Cluck, cluck.  The Bowie Blade had a great article, and the Bowie Star had wonderful pictures.  Here one of ours.  And on November 20, we had our fundraising party, a treat for the students who'd helped raise money for the school.

Our "chicken" principal greets children in the morning.

A castle-style moon-bounce,

and Winnie the Pooh visited.

November 12, November 14, and November 15, 2007.    We had donuts for Dad, muffins for Mom, and on Friday, Gratitude for Grandparents!  On all three days, the cafeteria was filled with Moms, Dads, and grandparents enjoying a donut or muffin, juice or coffee.  Our students' parents and grandparents are an important part of our Tulip Grove family.

November 2 2007.  Being good pays off!  Get caught doing the right thing and you may earn a Tiger Eye at Tulip Grove!  And once a month, the Tiger Eye store opens up, when students can redeem their tiger eyes for all sorts of things.  All students get a chance to come to the Tiger Eye store.

Fourth grade students go shopping!

Parent Liaison, Mrs. Charlton, helps run the store.

November 9, 2007.  The Student Government Association's canned food drive, Kids Helping Kids, is a success.  All food was donated to the Maryland Food Bank.

And the boxes filled up!  Tulip Grove cares!

November 8, 2007.  Third, fourth, and fifth grade students "Jump Rope for Heart," raising money for the American Heart Association, and getting exercise (and having fun) at the same time.

Warming up

Time to jump!

And jump!

November 7, 2007.  The Rotary Club donates a dictionary to each student in third and fourth grade.

A representative from the Bowie Rotary Club tells the students about the Rotary Clubs, and shows the students their new dictionary.

Mrs. Lopez's third grade class holds up their dictionaries.

Fourth grader Colin S. examines his new dictionary.

November 1, 2007.  It's Tulip Planting day.  Over 1000 tulip bulbs were planted at Tulip Grove.  See our Tulip Page for more pictures, and to see what the field looks like now.

The field was carefully prepared.

Staff and parents turned out to help.

And the children came.

First grader Ryan C. examines the hole carefully.

The fifth graders planted tulips too.

The bulbs wait, dormant, for spring.

October 26, 2007.  Our Fall Festival, sponsored by the PTA, is always a great way to spend the evening.  Trick or treating in the halls, and games in the cafeteria.

Face painting

Carnival Games

And the chance to win a home made cake at the cake walk!

October 12, 2007.  At the beginning of their reading unit on nature, Mrs. Holt's second graders go on a nature walk to see what they can find.

It was a beautiful day for a walk outside.

The children listen attentively as Mrs. Holt gives the directions -- Bring back nothing that is alive.

And off they go to look...

and find leaves and pinecones and rocks and acorns...

and a hole in a tree.  What might live here?

Finishing up in the courtyard, everyone has a bag full of marvelous finds.

October 3-4, 2007.   Our kindergarten and second grade classes watched caterpillars turn into butterflies, as part of their science class.  These are pictures of Mrs. Gilbert's class.

Chrysalis no longer -- the students watch butterflies emerge.

A good scientist examines everything closely.  Magnifying glasses help.

A sunny day for letting the butterflies go free in our courtyard.

September 20, 2007.   Mrs. Lopez models a math BCR for the parents, who listen attentively.

September 20, 2007.  Our annual ice cream social, sponsored by the PTA, was a big success!  Old students came back from Tasker to help parents work in the serving line, and students, teachers, and parents enjoyed ice cream sundaes together.

The PTA decorated the multi-purpose room with balloons, and manned the tables, as the students line up to get ice cream.

Parents and old students help with all the toppings -- chocolate syrup, M&Ms, marshmallows -- the works!

Then it's time to eat!

And eat.

And eat!!!

Mr. Baudoin was there.

August 20, 2007.  The first day of school.

A festive balloon arch greeted students on the first day of school.  Unlike last year, only one school bus pulled up, as Tulip Grove is once again a neighborhood school.  All the students line up on the front plaza before being greeted by Mr. Baudoin and entering school.

August 16, 2007.  And iced tea and cookie reception was held so parents could greet the new principal.

Many parents came to meet our new principal, Mr. Baudoin.    Parent Liaison, Mrs. Charlton, serves iced tea and cookies at the Meet and Greet.  A sudden thunderstorm moved us from the courtyard to the front hallway.

July 31, 2007.  There's lots to do over the summer to get ready for the new year.

Mr. Baudoin and Mr. Richardson painted the front hall and doors bright blue.  And Mr. Norris, Mr. Matthews, and Mr. Powell worked really hard to get our school spotless for August 20.
