Though new to the classroom, Evelyn Abatangelo is hardly new to working with youth.

Evelyn began her career as a probation officer for the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services. During her time helping troubled youth get back on track, she spent one year as an in-school probation officer at Northwestern High School, her alma mater. After seven years as a stay-at-home mom, Evelyn joined Dwight D. Eisenhower Middle School this year as a Spanish teacher.

“I’ve always wanted to work with kids, but I began my career focusing on those who were already in trouble,” she reflected. “That’s the opposite end of the spectrum from where I am now. I have the opportunity to be involved earlier in their lives and hopefully mentor them into making the right decisions that will lead them to success.”

Evelyn hopes to infuse excitement and energy into Spanish class.

“I want them to be excited about learning and engaged in speaking a second language,” she said. “I frequently remind my students that learning to speak a second language opens up your mind to think critically and will open the door to  many opportunities.”
