County Executive Angela D. Alsobrooks this week announced the appointment of Dr. Alvin Thornton as Chair of the Prince George's County Board of Education for a four-year term. A nationally-recognized expert on school funding and educational equity, Thornton is a former three-term Board Chair who previously served on the Board of Education from 1992 to 1999. He chaired the state's Commission on Education Finance, Equity, and Excellence, also known as the Thornton Commission, in the early 2000s.

“Dr. Alvin Thornton is a revered figure in Maryland public education. His vast knowledge of school system operations, funding and equity combined with his commitment to excellence will serve our students and families exceptionally well," said Dr. Monica Goldson, Interim Chief Executive Officer. "His unapologetic focus on equity for all students and demonstrated work to ensure high-quality educational opportunities will help advance our programs. I am excited to welcome Dr. Thornton back to the Board of Education.”

“Dr. Thornton brings with him a wealth of institutional knowledge with his extensive background in both education and education finance," said Alsobrooks. “At a time when we are getting ready to go to Annapolis to seek the necessary funding we need to support a school system that educates students who face numerous challenges outside the classroom, his expertise will help to make certain that we receive every dollar that our children deserve.”
