• On Wednesday, May 6, State Superintendent of Education Dr. Karen Salmon announced that all Maryland public schools will be closed for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year. A letter from CEO Dr. Monica Goldson is forthcoming with more information.

Scholar of the Week: Chesapeake Math and IT Academy South Senior Derrick Griffin

Chesapeake Math and IT Academy South senior Derrick Griffin loves art and painting, head to toe. He customizes his own sneakers. An entrepreneur in the making, he’s already designed more than 10 pairs of shoes.

Derrick, who holds a 3.92 GPA, participates in the Project Lead the Way program where he takes Advanced Placement courses in Statistics, Environmental Science, Calculus AB and English Language and Composition.


The varsity basketball player is also a member of the National Honor Society, Student Government Association, Toastmasters International and Vex Robotics club. 


Derrick’s role model is his older brother, James Michael Scott, a forward for the Philadelphia 76ers. His brother and mother constantly pushed him to excel in academics. Now, as he prepares to graduate high school, it is clear their efforts paid off. Derrick plans to attend a service academy and major in civil engineering.
