Message from CEO Monica Goldson - March 28, 2020

Thank you for your hard work and flexibility during the statewide school closures to slow the spread of COVID-19. To date, all of our school buildings, offices and buses have been cleaned and disinfected. We are now entering into a new phase of work through Friday, April 24. The next four weeks will count towards our required 180 days of school. Please see below for additional information.

    Academics

A plan for the continuity of learning will be distributed to all employees and families on Monday, March 30. Next week, we will begin distributing Chromebooks to students who do not have access to technology. Additional information on obtaining internet service will be mailed to the students’ homes where needed.

    Third-Quarter Grading Period

Monday, March 30 will remain the end of the third quarter. From Monday, March 30 through Wednesday, April 3, students will be allowed to electronically submit any work assigned or expected to be turned in during the two-week closure. Students who are unable to submit assignments electronically will not be penalized and an entry of exempt will be recorded in the gradebook. Any work identified by the teacher as enrichment during the two-week closure will not be graded. Teachers will have from Monday, April 6 through Wednesday, April 8 to input grades into SchoolMax.

    Fourth-Quarter Grading Period

Fourth quarter will begin Tuesday, April 14. Students will earn a Pass (P) or Incomplete (I) grade at the conclusion of the quarter. Final grades will represent a letter grade from the first three quarters and an explanation included on all transcripts that fourth-quarter grades were earned remotely.

Pay for Temporary and Substitute Employees

Long-term substitutes will continue to be paid through Friday, April 24. Short-term substitutes will not be paid during this period.  All other temporary employees will be paid through Friday, April 24.

    10- and 11-Month Employees

Ten- and 11-month employees will be paid through Friday, April 24. Days worked during this four-week time period will be used to meet our required 180 school days as established by Maryland State Department of Education. All 10- and 11-month employees are considered to be on telework beginning Monday, March 30. They are expected to proceed with the plans established in the continuity of learning plan as well as check and respond to emails from students, parents and others to address any questions and concerns.  Any employees who do not work their scheduled hours must take appropriate leave (annual/sick).

    12-Month Employees

PGCPS will no longer operate under Code Green. All eligible 12-month employees are expected to continue with telework. Work plans must continue to be submitted to your supervisor on a weekly basis. Failure to submit a complete telework plan will result in an expectation of the employee to take leave. Employees who do not work their scheduled hours must take appropriate leave (annual/sick).

    Spring Break

Staff will submit third-quarter grades and continue online professional development Monday, April 6 through Wednesday, April 8. All schools and offices will be closed on Thursday, April 9; Friday, April 10 and Monday, April 13. There will be no online instruction for students from Monday, April 6 through Monday, April 13. Online instruction will begin Tuesday, April 14.

    Social Distancing

Please take steps to protect yourself in public settings. Stay approximately 6 feet away or more from others. Avoid shaking hands; use a fist or elbow bump as an alternate greeting. Sneeze or cough into your arm or tissue to reduce the spread of germs.

Message from CEO Monica Goldson - March 13, 2020

In line with the state mandate to slow the spread of COVID-19, all schools will be closed from Monday, March 16 through Friday, March 27. All public school buildings and school buses will be cleaned and disinfected. There will be no school-sponsored field trips, extracurricular/athletic events or before/after care during this time. We have also suspended outside facility use until further notice.

We know that you have many questions about how the closure will impact your day-to-day work and the remainder of the 2019-20 school year. Please see below for additional information.

    Academics

Teachers distributed school assignments today to ensure continuity of learning during the closure. We have asked our educators to be accessible to students by email in case they have any questions related to assignments. In addition, enrichment activity packets will be available online on the PGCPS website by Wednesday, March 18 for grades Pre-K through 12.

    Third-Quarter Grading Period

A determination will be made as we get closer to returning to school on Monday, March 30 regarding the extension of the third-quarter grading period, which was originally scheduled to end that day.

Pay for Temporary and Substitute Employees

Long-term substitutes as of Friday, March 13 will continue to be paid during the two-week closure. All temporary employees will be paid over the two-week time closure for their scheduled hours to be worked. Other substitutes will not be paid during this two-week time period.

    10- and 11-Month Employees

Ten- and 11-month employees will be paid during the two-week closure. All 11-month employees should check email daily to respond to parent, student and staff concerns and inquiries.

    12-Month Employees/Telework

PGCPS will operate under Code Green. All 12-month employees must report to work, but telework will be available to all eligible employees. Supervisors will distribute Administrative Policy 4165 to all eligible employees by the close of business today. Work plans must demonstrate ample work to justify a full eight-hour day. If the work is less than eight hours, the remaining hours will need to be covered by some leave status in order for the employee to receive full pay. Employees must complete all four forms and submit them to supervisors by Monday, March 16 at noon.

Employees who must go in are required to utilize the 6-feet social distancing guidelines (outlined below).

    Plant Operations and Maintenance Employees

Plant Operations and Maintenance employees will report to duty each day based upon the established schedule and adhere to the social distance guidelines below.
