Senior Spotlight: Oxon Hill HS Student Sulaman Shah

Oxon Hill High School Science and Technology program scholar, athlete, musician and aspiring philanthropist Sulaman Shah is a rising STEM star who aspires to make global impact through science.

Shah is not waiting to graduate to get started!

For his senior Research Practicum, he is gaining real world experience working to determine the effects of stress on honey bees. He is completing the project with guidance from scientists at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), where he secured a full-year internship. At USDA, Shah is working alongside scientists with expertise in toxicology, biosciences and entomology — with a focus on honey bees.

“I’ve always been into nature, the outdoors and environmental science, so when I learned USDA was studying the bees, I was immediately interested,” said Shah.

As the world's most important pollinator of food crops, Shah explains how honey bees are vital to the economy and agriculture.

In addition to a keen interest in science, Shah is active in sports and in his community. He is a member of the Oxon Hill Varsity Lacrosse team; plays the viola in orchestra;  enjoys cooking, fishing, hiking and soccer; and is a member of the National Honor Society, National English Honor Society and National French Honor Society.

Shah has earned more than 100 service hours with Boy Scouts of America, including building a kiosk at the American Legion post in Cheltenham. He is also a member of Order of the Arrow, the National Honor Society of Boy Scouts of America.

A graduate of Maya Angelou French Immersion, Shah is fluent in French and hopes to someday put his multilingualism and science education to work in third world countries.
