Sonya Williams was first appointed by County Executive Rushern L. Baker III in January 2014. In December 2018, she was sworn in for her second elected term to represent Board of Education District 9 and in January 2021, she was appointed by Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks to serve as Vice-Chair.
Mrs. Williams, a Civil Engineer with over 25 years of project management experience on local and national construction projects. Mrs. Williams, a Prince George’s County resident since the age of 5, completed her secondary education at Crossland High School in 1985. After which she attended the University of Maryland to study Civil Engineering. Her career in Civil Engineering began as a project management intern at the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission working on the headquarters building in Laurel. Since the internship, she has worked on other local notable projects including the expansion of BWI-Marshall Airport and most recently the Tanger Outlet Mall. As a Civil Engineer specializing in project management, she has honed an important set of transferable leadership skills that include the ability to communicate across different education and experience levels, build successful teams that focus on similar goals, manage multi-million dollar budgets, and manage time and resources to support reaching the desired outcome on schedule and budget. She received her master’s degree in International Organizational Leadership from Georgetown University.
Mrs. Williams has used these leadership skills in the community in many different roles to include the PTSA President at Gwynn Park High School. With the assistance of the PTSA Executive Board and school leadership, the parents of Gwynn Park High School had informative PTSA meetings that included speakers such as Dr. Arbogast discussing Common Core Curriculum, military recruiters explaining the enlistment process, and representatives from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and Prince George’s County Community College providing insight on enrollment strategies. Working with a professional colleague, Mrs. Williams coordinated a visit to the school by the world- renowned artist Charles Bibb, to speak with art and business students on the “Business of Art”. In the past, Mrs. Williams has held other leadership positions in her community such as community organizer, parent association treasurer, school fundraising co-chair and community developer.
During her first elected term she has held over 50 “Coffee with Your School Board Member” events every third (3rd) Saturday of the month, worked closely with PGCPS Capital Programs office to improve the school construction and renovation process, sponsored transportation for high school students to attend an annual college fair, created and enhanced several reports to improve how the administration communicate its progress to the Board to support better governance and decision making, and has been an active member of several Board committees holding key committee leadership positions. Mrs. Williams’ goal to keep the District 9 community informed is achieved by being active on social media (Facebook and Twitter using the #PGCPSD9Rocks) and by sending out regular District 9 Newsletters. Sonya Williams continues to develop real estate across the nation through her full-time position as the Development Manager on multi-million dollar real estate development projects.
Since her tenure, Mrs. Williams has served as Chair and Vice Chair on the Board Academic Achievement and Operations, Budget & Fiscal Affairs Committees at various times from 2014 to present. In addition, she has been an integral part of the Career, Technology and Education (CTE) Workgroup, the Alternative Construction Financing (ACF) Development Team and Bus Transportation Task Force.
Mrs. Williams is an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and Lion’s Club, and a member of the Board of Directors for MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital. She resides in Clinton with her husband and their two sons. They worship at Mount Ennon Baptist Church in Clinton.
