Position Summary:

New Position – Effective July 1, 2026

Under the direction of the Director of Curriculum and Instruction, the Coordinating Supervisor of Academics  is responsible for overseeing the implementation of the state and systemic academic priorities, as well as providing leadership for the designing, planning, development, implementation and monitoring of work across all content areas to support the initiatives.  The incumbent of this position will supervise assigned content team personnel and provide leadership for the staff in planning responsive instructional improvements while monitoring the assigned goals and milestones.  The Coordinating Supervisor will work on special projects as assigned by the Director, support presentations made by the Director to the Board of Education, and engage in frequent dialogue with community members, state officials, and media representatives.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with academic program supervisors and specialists on professional development needs;
  • Collaborates with academic programs to secure budgets and grants that will benefit the initiatives and programs offered by the department;
  • Designs and conducts evaluations of program milestones, goals and strategies;
  • Collects and uses data to inform departmental decisions and implements and monitors intervention plans and adjustments;
  • Develops and leads regularly scheduled meetings with the academic program teams, other departmental staff, area offices and other staff as needed;
  • Manages projects and prepares reports required by the Director, and responds to informational requests by other school system offices and outside organizations;
  • Writes and disseminates departmental communication, reports, surveys, evaluations and related documents;
  • Maintains fiscal accountability by reviewing financial documents and iProcurement requests and approving payroll;
  • Participates actively in meetings and on committees related to improving academic programs for students;
  • Attends Board of Education meetings as requested to respond to programmatic inquiries as related to academic programs;
  • Represents academic programs at meetings and conferences as requested to share information, receive updates, and build collaborative relationships with other internal offices and agencies and the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE);
  • Participates in the selection, supervision, and evaluation process of department staff;
  • Serves in the absence of, and at the direction of, the Director of Curriculum and Instruction by communicating department directives and acting as a liaison to the school system and external agencies; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned.  

Qualifications:

  • Thorough knowledge of educational theory, research-based best practices, national standards, and Maryland College and Career Ready Standards;
  • Thorough knowledge of the instructional programs in the district;
  • Ability to support the department's vision and systemic theory of change while promoting open communication, collaboration, and problem solving;
  • Ability to demonstrate initiative, assume leadership responsibilities, and prioritize multiple tasks in a complex school system;
  • Ability to collect, analyze and use data to inform literacy improvement across all content areas;
  • Ability to use systems thinking to establish clear goals for curriculum, instruction and programs that will strengthen rigorous literacy instruction district-wide;
  • Knowledge of the school improvement planning process;
  • Knowledge of employee evaluation requirements;
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and collaboration skills; and
  • Excellent writing, project management, computer and and technology skills necessary to produce comprehensive reports and deliver presentations.

Education and/or Experience Requirements:

Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in curriculum and instruction, administration, or a closely related field required; Doctorate preferred. A minimum of three (3) years of administrator experience required.

Certification:

Holds or is eligible for a valid professional license in Administrator I (historical) or Supervisor of Instruction, Assistant Principal, or Principal issued by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE).

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Oversees and provides guidance and direction to assigned personnel.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.
