Position Summary:

New Position – Effective July 1, 2026

Under the direction of the Program Manager, the Coordinator – Sustainability Programs coordinates, administers, evaluates, and supervises sustainable materials management activities to include reuse, recycling, upcycling, composting, materials substitution, waste diversion strategies, and environmental programs as an integral part of the district’s materials management function. The incumbent of this position develops educational and training materials and delivers presentations to stakeholders to provide information regarding materials management programs.  The Coordinator – Sustainability Programs promotes concepts of the circular economy, oversees program delivery, develops administrative procedures, and maintains records to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develops and revises policies and procedures related to reuse, recycling, upcycling, composting, materials substitution, waste diversion strategies, and environmental programs;
  • Provides technical assistance to and collaborates with personnel in the development, implementation, and improvement of school recycling and materials management programs that support district initiatives, including implementation of the Climate Change Action Plan, Environmental Literacy, and the Maryland Green Schools Program;
  • Identifies training and resource needs to improve recycling and materials management programs;
  • Designs, coordinates, and provides professional development activities and training for staff; develops training manuals, guides, and materials;
  • Collaborates with stakeholders to share guidance, regulations, and legislative initiatives and support program implementation;
  • Works collaboratively to systemically integrate recycling policies, procedures, and best practices into the district’s operations, policies, and asset management functions; identifies opportunities for innovation and improvement;
  • Supports the promotion of the recycling program; develops and maintains program materials and resources for materials management initiatives;
  • Identifies and implements strategies to encourage staff and students to recycle and reduce waste;
  • Develops internal and external collaborative partnerships to support program goals;
  • Manages and administers recycling materials, equipment, supplies and budgets;
  • Designs, implements, and manages data collection processes and reporting;
  • Monitors, reviews, and comments on legislative proposals impacting materials management, and develops fiscal impact statements for legislative bills;
  • Researches topics, opportunities, costs, and procedures on matters relating to recycling and waste reduction;
  • Develops bid documents to establish, procure, and manage contracts with vendors; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of federal, state and local laws regarding recycling and other environmental issues in schools;
  • Thorough knowledge of methods and best practices related to recycling and waste reduction;
  • Knowledgeable and skilled in the use of equipment and tools required for recycling and waste reduction; ability to instruct others in the use;
  • Proficient technology skills to utilize various computer programs and technology to develop presentations and create documents;
  • Written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to draft clear, professional and compelling materials;
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and maintain attention to detail;
  • Ability to organize, plan, and coordinate a variety of programs and services; and
  • Ability to keep records and prepare reports.

Education and/or Experience Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in science, environmental studies, or a related field required.  A minimum of three (3) years of experience in the planning and execution of sustainability practices and environmental stewardship.

Certification:

None required.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

No direct supervisory responsibilities.
