Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Instructional Supervisor, the Instructional Specialist – AVID will work with the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Center to provide professional development, support and coach site level AVID staff. The incumbent of this position will provide support and professional development for educators and counselors. The Instructional Specialist will also oversee data collection and certification processes for the district. The incumbent of this position will recruit and train AVID tutors, build connections with institutions of higher education, and serve as the primary point of contact for the AVID center.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Monitors proper implementation of AVID programs through site visits, classroom observations, co-planning/co-teaching and coaching;
- Serves as the primary point of contact for the AVID organization which includes long-term and short-term planning and decision making;
- Provides consultation to the supervisor and executive leadership on the AVID program and makes recommendations for the district;
- Works with school principals and AVID coordinators to identify school-based and district goals related to AVID;
- Facilitates monthly AVID site coordinator meetings;
- Provides technical support in the areas of AVID data submission, the certification process and curriculum implementation;
- Coordinates and delivers district-wide AVID professional development;
- Coordinates and provides AVID methodology training to new and experienced AVID educators;
- Supports site coordinators and administration with AVID summer institute and other AVID programs;
- Coordinates collaborative partnerships with institutions of higher education;
- Observes lessons and provides targeted and actionable feedback to faculty;
- Conducts assessments, data collection and analysis of formal and informal data for use in targeting and monitoring the effectiveness of the program; and
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Knowledge of college and career readiness programs and platforms such as AVID, Naviance, and SchoolLinks;
- Knowledge of AVID methodology, programming and reporting requirements;
- Knowledge of school organization and school system goals and objectives;
- Knowledge of effective collaborative planning techniques;
- Knowledge of PGCPS administrative policies and procedures;
- Skilled in program management;
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills;
- Skilled in using educational technology and other technology platforms such as Microsoft, Google applications and Zoom conferencing platforms;
- Ability to lead and coach diverse teams and teachers; and
- Ability to work effectively with students, parents, administrators, colleagues, the community and other school system staff.
Education and/or Experience Requirements:
Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in school administration and supervision, counseling, education or a related field required. A minimum of five (5) years of successful teaching experience required. Previous experience as an AVID site team coordinator or AVID teacher preferred.
Certification:
Holds or is eligible for a valid professional license in Administrator I (historical) or Supervisor of Instruction, Assistant Principal, or Principal issued by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE).
Supervisory Responsibilities:
No direct supervisory responsibilities.
