Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Instructional Supervisor, the Instructional Specialist is responsible for assisting assigned schools in facilitating the development, monitoring, implementation, and assessment of Elementary Mathematics Special Education Program and in communicating with appropriate stakeholders.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides support to designated teachers/schools in the area of elementary mathematics curriculum, instruction and classroom management as it relates to special education classrooms;
  • Collaborates with administrators, mathematics contact persons, staff and related personnel, such as therapists and social workers, to meet the requirements of inclusive special education programs;
  • Performs workshops on curricular issues, specific teaching strategies for inclusive classrooms, and behavior management in collaboration with the departments of Special Education, other departments and Mathematics;
  • Assists with the development, monitoring and procurement of resources that align to the mathematics curriculum and supports Special Needs students;
  • Researches and reviews products to support Mathematics Intervention for diverse learners;
  • Provides support for curriculum and instruction with revision of documents to support diverse learners as required;
  • Serves as a liaison to Regional and Central Offices with respect to Mathematics;
  • Oversees projects as designated by the supervisor;
  • Assists principal and school improvement resource teacher in facilitating the development, monitoring, implementation, and assessment of the School Improvement Program;
  • Plans, conducts, and provides follow-up for staff development activities focused on development, implementation, management, and monitoring of the school improvement plan;
  • Conducts demonstration lessons and may perform teacher observations; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Thorough understanding of special education regulations, policies, and procedures;
  • Experienced writing curriculum framework guides for mathematics or an integrating curriculum desired;
  • Thorough knowledge of mathematics pedagogy and mathematics current best practices preferred;
  • Experience in leading staff development initiatives;
  • Thorough knowledge of the school system’s curriculum, including its Scope and Sequence documents;
  • Thorough knowledge of the school improvement planning process;
  • Knowledge of school schedules which maximize the use of instructional time;
  • Ability to analyze student performance and participation data for instructional implication;
  • Computer literacy including proficiency with Microsoft Word; and
  • Demonstrated skill in effective human relations and in oral and written communications.

Education and/or Experience Requirements:

Master's degree from an accredited college or university and five (5) years successful experience teaching mathematics at the elementary level required.

Certification:

Holds or is eligible for a valid professional license in Administrator I (historical) or Supervisor of Instruction, Assistant Principal, or Principal issued by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE).

Supervisory Responsibilities:

No direct supervisory responsibilities.
