Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Elementary and Middle School Mathematics Instructional Supervisor, the Instructional Specialist – Mathematics Accelerant provides strategic support to schools by coordinating and strengthening the work of the Title I mathematics instructional personnel in high priority schools. The incumbent of this position focuses on improving mathematics instructional practices through aligned coaching practices, effective intervention systems, and implementation of the Maryland College and Career-Ready Standards (MCCRS). The Instructional Specialist builds the instructional capacity of teachers and school leaders in high priority schools to improve mathematics outcomes.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Supports the Mathematics Accelerant Teacher in Title I schools with planning and delivering small-group instruction and targeted interventions aligned to grade-level standards;
- Assists educators and school leaders in strengthening high-quality mathematics instruction grounded in best practices and evidence-based strategies;
- Promotes consistency and coherence in coaching practices across assigned schools, collaborating with math instructional personnel and school leaders to ensure intervention efforts complement Tier I instruction and accelerate student growth;
- Coordinates and facilitates math learning lab visits and professional learning opportunities;
- Supports the development, implementation and refinement of intervention structures to address the needs of students performing below grade level;
- Provides guidance on monitoring schools’ student progress and adjusting instructional supports based on formative and summative data;
- Supports math instructional personnel in implementing mathematics instruction aligned with the Maryland College and Career Ready Standards (MCCRS);
- Assists educators and school teams in implementing mathematics strategies aligned with School Performance Plans (SPP), including Comprehensive Support and Improvement (CSI), Additional Targeted Support and Improvement (ATSI), and Targeted Support and Improvement (TSI) priorities;
- Supports alignment of instructional efforts with Title I program goals to improve mathematics achievement and reduce achievement gaps;
- Serves as a liaison to the Title I Office, Office of Organizational Development, Area Offices, and Innovation and Performance Zone to ensure coordinated support, messaging and implementation of coaching practices and curriculum priorities;
- Provides guidance on progress-monitoring systems and data-driven decision-making;
- Maintains weekly documentation of instructional support, including coaching activities, intervention planning, and progress monitoring;
- Conducts formal and informal observations;
- Provides regular feedback and recommendations to supervisors regarding trends, needs, and opportunities for continuous improvement; and
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Deep knowledge of Maryland College and Career Ready Standards (MCCRS) for mathematics;
- Strong understanding of mathematics pedagogy, intervention strategies and best instructional practices;
- Experience supporting or coaching teachers and leaders in mathematics instruction;
- Ability to analyze student data and apply findings to improve instruction and intervention;
- Knowledge of school improvement planning processes, including SPP, CSI, ATSI, and TSI frameworks;
- Strong facilitation, collaboration and communication skills;
- Ability to coordinate work across multiple stakeholders without direct supervision;
- Proficiency with technology tools used for planning, communication and data analysis (e.g., Microsoft Office, Google Suite);
- Demonstrated competence in developing and leading staff development sessions for teachers and/or principals and parents;
- Knowledge of personnel and program evaluation; and
- Excellent written and oral communication and technology skills.
Education and/or Experience Requirements:
Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in education, mathematics or a closely related field required. A minimum of five (5) years of successful teaching experience, preferably in elementary or middle school. Previous experience in instructional coaching, intervention leadership, or district-level support preferred.
Certification:
Holds or is eligible for a valid professional license in Administrator I (historical) or Supervisor of Instruction, Assistant Principal, or Principal issued by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE).
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Coordinates and aligns the work of the Mathematics Accelerant Teacher; provides guidance, feedback, and implementation support.
