Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Director of Curriculum and Instruction, the Instructional Supervisor of Mathematics is responsible for monitoring department programs and initiatives and executing administrative responsibilities as required. The Instructional Supervisor of Mathematics assists the Director in developing aligned curriculum documents, providing professional development for staff, and developing a budget based on analysis of needs.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervises all facets of program planning and development and associated budgets (including grants) for the mathematics office, including identification of program priorities for mathematics, facilitation of major workshops and meetings, and oversight to monitor operations;
  • Coordinates all facets of curriculum and program evaluation for the mathematics programs;
  • Supports all facets of personnel management for the mathematics program by providing ongoing input concerning quality of staff performance, and developing programs of study to upgrade the skills and knowledge base of the mathematics teaching staff;
  • Develops and implements systemic, program-specific, and school-based programs of staff development in all aspects of the mathematics program including training design, delivery and evaluation;
  • Provides leadership in all phases and facets of administrative operations for the mathematics program;
  • Coordinates the review, approval, acquisition, and distribution of appropriate equipment, materials and print and non-print resources to support all facets of mathematics program planning, development, and implementation;
  • Serves as school system spokesperson for parent and community groups and stakeholders to articulate relevant facets of mathematics program operations;
  • Provides ongoing interaction and articulation within and across the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, other departments and divisions, and at the systemic level, emphasizing planning and problem solving related to the state standards; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated administrative skills; sound knowledge, skill and understanding related to the major content area assigned;
  • Demonstrated public speaking and human relations skills; demonstrated expertise in writing and administering grants;
  • Full knowledge of current trends in Mathematics education, including constructivist pedagogy, performance-based assessment, instructional materials and design of Mathematics facilities;
  • Demonstrated competence in developing and leading staff development sessions for teachers, principals, and parents;
  • Knowledge of state standards, benchmarks and alternative assessment;
  • Experience and expertise in personnel and program evaluation;
  • Extensive expertise in the design, implementation, and evaluation of professional development programs and initiatives;
  • Excellent written and oral communication and technology skills; and
  • Extensive experience in the area of budget development and fiscal management.

Education and/or Experience Requirements:

Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in education, curriculum and instruction or a related field required. A minimum of five (5) years of mathematics teaching experience required with a minimum of three (3) years administrative and/or supervisory or specialist experience required.

Certification:

Holds or is eligible for a valid professional license in Administrator I (historical) or Supervisor of Instruction, Assistant Principal, or Principal issued by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE).

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Provides guidance and direction to assigned personnel.
