Board Policy 0121 - People-First Language

The Board of Education believes in a culture of dignity and individual respect for all children and adults. Children and adults with disabilities are persons first and are not defined by their disability. It is the intent of the Board that:

  1. Individual respect and personal dignity are due to every person, regardless of ability or disability;
  2. People-First language shall be used in all written and spoken communications with Prince George’s County Public Schools; and
  3. People-First language will acknowledge individual respect and personal dignity due every person, regardless of ability or disability.

The Board, therefore, directs the Superintendent of Schools to develop an administrative procedure for this policy to include steps for full implementation and professional development.
