Findings from the 2015 Employee Satisfaction Survey

The Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) district, one of the largest public school systems in the country, employs approximately 18,000 people to deliver high quality education to 124,000 students.  To recruit, motivate, and retain highly skilled individuals for this important work it is necessary for PGCPS to cultivate and maintain positive work environments. District leadership commissioned the Department of Research and Evaluation (DRE) to conduct the 2015 Employee Satisfaction Survey to determine employees’ perceptions of how well the district is meeting that need.  The survey was administered to all employees electronically beginning on June 6, 2015.  Responses were accepted through August 31, 2015.  During that time, 8,733 employees responded to items related to different aspects of job satisfaction.  Overall, about three-fourths expressed satisfaction with their employment within PGCPS, which is an increase from 2011 when almost 71% of employees indicated they were satisfied with their jobs.  School-based administrators expressed the highest rate of job satisfaction in 2015 with 90%, compared with 80% in 2011.  While school-based instructional staff were the least likely to express satisfaction with their jobs, a higher percentage did so in 2015 compared with 2011.  Approximately 73% of school-based instructional staff indicated they were satisfied, which represents an increase of more than 10 percentage points from four years earlier.  The aspects of their jobs with which employees expressed satisfaction most often were the quality of their relationships with colleagues, and the autonomy they have to complete their tasks.  Employees were least satisfied with their compensation, their ability to maintain a healthy work-life balance, and district management.
