    School Calendar Development Process

    Background

All 2018-2019 school calendars in Maryland must include a minimum of 180 instructional days and include the following state-mandated holidays/closures:

    • Thanksgiving Day and the day after
    • Christmas Eve through January 1
    • Martin Luther King Jr. Day
    • Presidents’ Day
    • The Friday before Easter and through the Monday after Easter
    • Memorial Day
    • Primary and general election days

In August 2016, Governor Larry Hogan mandated through executive order that all school districts must start the school year after Labor Day and end by June 15.

In previous years, school systems set their own calendars and waivers were issued to address inclement weather days beyond those anticipated in the calendar.

    Development Timeline

The PGCPS School Calendar Committee meets each year in the fall to develop a calendar for the following school year. Members include teachers, parents, school administrators, union representatives and central office staff.

Over the course of several meetings, the committee develops a draft calendar to share with the executive team. Once approved, the calendar is shared with families and employees for feedback through a survey. After final adjustments are made, the calendar is submitted to the Prince George’s County Board of Education for review and adoption.

    Inclement Weather Makeup Days

School calendars must allow for three inclement weather makeup days. For the 2018-2019 school year, PGCPS included three inclement weather makeup days, built into the end of the fourth quarter. If two days are used, the last day for students will be June 13 and the last day for teachers will be June 19; if one day is used, the last day for students will be June 12 and the last day for teachers will be June 18; if no days are used, the last day for students will be June 11 and the last day for teachers will be June 17.

So far this year, PGCPS closed for students on the following day(s) due to inclement weather:

    • January 14 (Makeup day: June 12)
