Positive Behavioral Intervention & Supports

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supposts

PBIS is a broad range of systemic and individualized strategies for achieving important social and learning outcomes while preventing problem behavior.  PBIS is the integration of valued outcomes, science of human behavior validated procedures and systems change.  PBIS addresses "best practices" and current research about the issues of prevention and early behavioral intervention in schools.  This unique approach to changing behaviors in schools emphasizes prevention and capacity building at the school level with a focus on concrete activities and strategies to support safe, non-violent environments that optimize the potential for learning. The goal of PBIS is to create a positive school culture in which pro-social behaviors are explicity taught and reinforced, and all adults respond to the occurrence of problem behaviors in a consistent manner.

Prince George's County has over 79 schools which are implementing this very successful and effective program.

PBIS is an approach which emphasizes:

*  Spending time building and working with the whole school as a foundation for both social and academic success.

*  Emphasizing the prevention of problem behaviors.

*  Using a three-tiered continuum of behavior support practices to facilitate prevention of problem behaviors.

*  Actively using data for decision making.
