Cell phones may be used on school grounds only during lunch and after school.
Cell phones, headphones, and other listening devices are prohibited in hallways, classrooms, restrooms, and school offices, unless permitted to be used for instructional purposes as directed by each individual teacher.
During the instructional day, cell phones must remain out of sight and in silent mode.
Cell phones must be placed in lockers, backpacks, or another location away from students and their desks during assessments.
Emergencies must be reported to an available staff member so the responsible adult can contact parents, as needed.
Students may be subject to disciplinary action if their use of their cell phone disrupts the school’s educational environment. Examples of this include, but are not limited to: cheating, bullying, harassing, unlawful recording or photographing, irresponsible use of social media, and violating other school rules.
The school and its staff are not responsible for any damage to or theft of a student’s cell phone. Students must properly secure and take care of their own phones.
Students and their parents must read, sign and return the cell phone policy to the team leader at the beginning of the school year. Signing the policy acknowledges acceptance. Students will not be permitted to have their phones on during lunch until the signed policy is returned.

**The use of cell phones during lunch is a privilege at Hyattsville MS. We believe in giving students the opportunity to practice responsible use and abide by the rules outlined in the Cell Phone Policy. Please see the consequences below, for cell phone violations.

Consequences of Violating Cell Phone Policy

If students violate the school’s cell phone policy, the following will occur:

First offense: Verbal warning and reminder of the cell phone policy by teacher.
Second offense: The student’s cell phone will be confiscated by school security or administration and held in the main office until the end of the school day. Before being allowed to pick up their phone at the end of the day, students must discuss and review the cell phone policy with a staff member.
Third offense: The student’s cell phone will be confiscated by school security or administration and held in the main office until the end of the school day. The student’s parents will be contacted via phone or email and informed of the refusal to follow the school’s cell phone policy.
Fourth offense: The student’s cell phone will be confiscated by school security or administration and held in the main office until the end of the school day. The student will receive lunch detention. The student’s parents will be contacted via phone or email and informed of the refusal to follow the school’s cell phone policy.
Fifth offense: The student’s cell phone will be confiscated by school security or administration and held in the main office until the end of the school day. The student will be prohibited from bringing their cell phone back on school grounds for two weeks. The student’s cell phone will be confiscated upon arrival.
Further disciplinary action will be taken against repeat offenders.

**The administration reserves the right to adjust these consequences on a case-by-case basis if needed. For example, extreme behaviors that break the law or engage in bullying or harassment of other students may result in suspension.

**The administration reserves the right to revoke cell phone lunch privileges school wide if violations are numerous and the safety and/or privacy of students or staff is compromised.
