School Calendar Development Process

Background

School calendars for all counties in Maryland must include a minimum of 180 instructional days and include the following state-mandated holidays/closures:

  • Thanksgiving Day and the day after
  • Christmas Eve through January 1
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day
  • Presidents’ Day
  • The Friday before and the Monday after Easter
  • Memorial Day
  • Primary and general election days

Development Timeline

The PGCPS School Calendar Committee meets each year to develop a calendar for the following school year. Members include teachers, parents, school administrators, union representatives and central office staff.

Over the course of several meetings, the committee develops a draft calendar to share with the executive team. Once approved, the draft calendar is shared with families and employees for feedback through a survey. After final adjustments are made, the calendar is submitted to the Prince George’s County Board of Education for review and adoption.

Inclement Weather Makeup Days

School calendars must allow for inclement weather makeup days. For the past several years, PGCPS has built three inclement weather makeup days into the school calendar. If they aren’t used, the last days for students and teachers are adjusted accordingly.
