Driving Impact: Grant Program Highlights

Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) has consistently leveraged strategic state and federal grant funding to expand its operational bandwidth and deepen educational impact. Rather than treating grants as supplemental budget fillers, the district targets awards that directly catalyze its core strategic priorities—translating discretionary funding into measurable academic intervention, specialized programming, and equitable student support.

By aggressively securing outside funding, PGCPS bridges resource gaps, introduces innovative instructional models, and scales high-need services that would otherwise outpace local tax revenue.

Highlighted below are awarded grant programs and they are strategically aligned with one of the five Blueprint Pillars.

Systems of Professional Learning

Blueprint Alignment: Pillar 2 – High Quality & Diverse Teachers and Leaders

Supported by MSDE’s Systems of Professional Learning Grant Program, PGCPS launched a Train-the-Trainer Leader Academy to build facilitation and coaching capacity. Teacher Leaders and Coaches attended the University of Maryland’s "The One Thing" Conference and participated in monthly skill-building workshops, equipping them to help classroom teachers roll out foundational instructional practices.

Blueprint Alignment: Pillar 3 — College & Career Readiness

Funded by the Maryland State Department of Education, PGCPS provided Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) students with cultural and career-connected learning experiences at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum. Students explored exhibitions, learned about curatorial careers, and engaged in hands-on exhibit design activities that built creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking skills. The visits connected students to Maryland’s rich history while boosting their college and career readiness.

Title III English Language Arts

Blueprint Pillar 4 - More Resources to Ensure that All Students are Successful

The Title III grant provides federal funding to support over 35,000 active Multilingual Learners (MLs) in Prince George’s County as they work toward English proficiency and academic success. This funding supports language instruction programs, professional development for educators, and family engagement initiatives, while ensuring schools demonstrate progress in ML achievement.

Several of the Title III-funded initiatives are designed to ensure tailored support for students, educators, and families. A notable example is the program’s collaboration with the University of Maryland, which led to the development of a first-of-its-kind Post-Master’s Certificate for PGCPS Professional School Counselors in Supporting Immigrant Students. This program not only enhances staff expertise but also strengthens the quality of services available to PGCPS’ students, ensuring they receive the targeted support they need to thrive.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

Blueprint Pillar 2 — High-Quality & Diverse Teachers and Leaders; Pillar 4 — More Resources for Students to Be Successful; Pillar 5 — Governance & Accountability

Funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this project aims to support implementation of the What Works in Schools program in PGCPS and enhance surveillance of adolescent risk behaviors through the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) and of school practices through the School Health Profiles Survey. By investing in teacher professional development and promoting student well-being, PGCPS is committed to creating a healthier and more supportive learning environment for all students.
