Capital Programs 2026 Outlook: Building Momentum Across Prince George’s County

By Brittney Bennett - Published March 5, 2026

2026 is set to be a landmark year for facilities planning and construction in Prince George’s County. From new classrooms to modern upgrades, here are the highlights of what our planning and construction team has in store for the year ahead.

High Point High School & New Northern Adelphi High School: Advancing Design and Engagement

In 2026, the High Point High School and New Northern Adelphi High School projects will continue through planning and design. In 2025, both projects established project planning committees, which met throughout the year to support design development and provide meaningful community input.

Opportunities for community engagement will continue for both projects in 2026 through community meetings, additional project planning committee sessions, and other engagement efforts to ensure stakeholders remain informed and involved as planning progresses.

Suitland High School: A Major Milestone and More Progress Ahead

The Suitland High School project reached a major milestone at the beginning of 2026 with the substantial completion and opening of the new comprehensive high school building. The new facility recently hosted the Superintendent's State of the Schools Address, providing legislators, elected officials, and PGCPS staff an early look at the new, state-of-the-art school prior to the official ribbon cutting planned for May 2026.

Construction activity will continue this year, including progress on the new CVPA building, completion of the comprehensive high school auditorium, and additional site improvements such as tennis and baseball fields and landscaping.

Projects Reaching the Finish Line: William Wirt Middle School & William S. Schmidt Environmental Education Center

Two major projects are expected to reach final completion in 2026. The William Wirt Middle School project is anticipated to complete its final milestones this year, including athletic fields and remaining site work.

Also expected to reach completion in 2026 is the William S. Schmidt Environmental Education Center project, which includes the construction of a new residential “Green Village,” a full-service dining and cooking facility that seats approximately 275 students and staff, and additional site and landscape improvements.

Planning Ahead: Launch of the 2028 Educational Facilities Master Plan (EFMP)

This year, the Department of Capital Programs’ Planning Division will begin development of the next 2028 Educational Facilities Master Plan (EFMP). The EFMP is a key planning document that guides the capital budget and is required by the state to be submitted and/or updated annually. It outlines priorities and provides direction for how funding should be allocated and invested.

Throughout this year’s EFMP development process, the Planning Division will engage internal PGCPS stakeholders and communities across Prince George’s County to better understand district needs and the overall facility portfolio. The goal is to create a stronger, more comprehensive strategic vision for how PGCPS approaches construction and facility improvements across the district. The EFMP is expected to be finalized in 2027.

Looking Ahead

Across Prince George’s County, the Department of Capital Programs continues to move forward with purpose, creating modern learning environments, investing in long-term educational infrastructure, and ensuring projects reflect community needs and district priorities. From construction milestones to long-term planning, 2026 will be an exciting year. We look forward to continuing progress and sharing updates throughout 2026 as these projects move forward.
