Course: Online Advanced Placement Calculus AB

School Type:
High School
School Max Description:
Online Advanced Placement Calculus AB
Content Area:
MVLO Mathematics
Description:
In AP Calculus AB, students learn to understand change geometrically and visually (by studying graphs of curves), analytically (by studying and working with mathematical formulas), numerically (by seeing patterns in sets of numbers), and verbally. Instead of simply getting the right answer, students learn to evaluate the soundness of proposed solutions and to apply mathematical reasoning to real-world models. Calculus helps scientists, engineers, and financial analysts understand the complex relationships behind real-world phenomena. The equivalent of an introductory college-level calculus course, AP Calculus AB prepares students for the AP Exam and further studies in science, engineering, and mathematics. Upon completion of this course students will be able to work with functions represented in a variety of ways: graphical, numerical, analytical, or verbal; understand the connections among these representations; understand the meaning of the derivative in terms of a rate of change and local linear approximation and be able to use derivatives to solve a variety or problems; understand the meaning of the definite integral both as a limit of Riemann sums and as the net accumulation of change and should be able to use integrals to solve a variety of problems; and understand the relationship between the derivative and the definite integral as expressed in both parts of the fundamental theorem of calculus. Students may take the first semester of the course without taking the second semester but may not take semester 2 without taking semester 1. Required resources: TI-83 or TI-83 Plus calculator. Read “Getting Started” and Chapter 1 in the TI Guidebook before your course starts
