UPPER MARLBORO, MD – In preparation for the 2017-18 school year, Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) will host an orientation day on Aug. 31 for students entering prekindergarten and kindergarten, and on Sept. 5 for students entering sixth, seventh and ninth grades.

Prekindergarten and Kindergarten Orientation Day

Prekindergarten and kindergarten students will participate in programs designed to help them transition to their schools. Parents of new students will receive details from their child’s school.

Middle and High School Orientation Day

Students entering sixth or seventh grades, depending on middle school configuration, and first-time ninth-graders will attend all-day programs at their schools. Students will receive breakfast and lunch. Students who ride buses will be picked up and dropped off at their regular time and bus stop location. Please visit the PGCPS website for bus stop locations and drop off and pick up times. Additionally, administrators will send a notification letter to students.

Orientation Day allows students to participate in their regular school schedule, attend an information session designed to provide them with the resources needed for an academically and socially successful school year, and meet key staff members, student guides and peers.

Students should arrive to school with their printed schedule from SchoolMAX, which will open to students and families on September 1. Students will attend classes throughout the day in accordance with their schedules and participate in information sessions about a variety of topics, including:

  • Middle/high school schedules
  • School bus transportation and rules for riding the bus
  • School policies
  • Lockers
  • Extracurricular activities
  • Tools for success, such as student handbooks and calendars
  • Strategies for success, including homework and student responsibilities
  • Important resources that help make the high school experience a success
  • Graduation requirements and information on SchoolMax, transcripts, testing and more

Parents with questions about orientation days should contact their child’s school. The first day of school for all PGCPS students is Wednesday, Sept. 6.
