Closures affect all programming at the school until Monday

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. — On Wednesday, March 11, Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) was notified that an individual affiliated with Eleanor Roosevelt High School and College Park Academy had close contact with someone who traveled to a country under a high-risk coronavirus (COVID-19) warning. As a precaution, both schools will be closed Thursday, March 12 and Friday, March 13 for cleaning and sanitizing. Students and staff will return Monday, March 16.

Due to confidentiality rules, the school system cannot share identifying details about the individual. The Prince George’s County Health Department is conducting an investigation and gathering important information from the patient to help keep the public safe and healthy. The closures affect all programming at the school, including before and after-school activities and all athletic,  extracurricular and weekend events.

Cleaning and disinfection procedures will follow Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) best practices for the prevention of COVID-19 and other viral respiratory illnesses. This will include high-traffic areas and surfaces, such as doorknobs, keyboards, handrails and countertops.

Eleanor Roosevelt and College Park Academy parents and guardians may contact eroos.info@pgcps.org or cpark.info@pgcps.org if they have questions. The parent letter is posted on both school websites.

There will be a telephone town hall on Thursday, March 12 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. with CEO Dr. Monica Goldson, County Health Officer Dr. Ernest Carter, and Dr. George Askew, County Deputy Chief Administrative Officer for Health, Human Services, and Education. Parents and guardians will receive a call at 6:30 p.m. to be connected. The call-in number will also be posted on the PGCPS website and social media channels.
