UPPER MARLBORO, MD - Chief Executive Officer Dr. Monica Goldson unveiled a $2.3 billion proposed budget for fiscal year 2022 with a focus on educational and operational improvement for Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) through transformation, equity and innovation.

The FY 2022 Proposed Annual Operating Budget proposal aims to bridge three major divides: statewide funding shortfalls and inequities; resource and achievement gaps within schools; and an operating budget deficit.

“Virtual learning has indelibly changed our school system and the face of public education. Most importantly, it has shown us what is possible,” said Dr. Monica Goldson, Chief Executive Officer. “As we pivot even further into personalized technology-based instruction, we must maintain students’ access to digital devices and internet access. This requires continued commitment from our state and county partners on behalf of the nearly 132,000 students across our schools.”

The budget also reflects the Board of Education Budget priorities and five CEO areas of focus for the 2021-22 school year: addressing the digital divide; mental health supports; building maintenance; school budgeting effectiveness; and program efficiency.

In addition to supporting critical student-centered investments, the plan also outlines fiscal actions to close a sizable budget gap:

  • Achieving savings in the current year through hiring freezes, overtime freezes and school discretionary reductions, then redirecting $44.8 million of those current-year savings towards reducing the FY 2022 budget deficit;
  • Realizing $18.9 million in FY 2022 centralized reductions, contract efficiencies and additional centrally-budgeted reconciling items;
  • Identifying savings of $2.5 million through operational and instructional programmatic reviews;
  •  Utilizing additional fund balance and salary lapse totaling $44.2 million.
