We recognize today’s school closure decision came later than typical. We sincerely apologize for the challenge this presented, but when faced with rapidly changing conditions, we will always prioritize safety over a timely announcement.
We are committed to being transparent about the process.
We moved quickly on December 4 to announce a delay based on initial weather forecasts and road assessments.
However, as conditions evolved this morning and our team received updated reports on untreated secondary roads and the widespread nature of the weather event impacting employees traveling from across the region, it became clear that a delay was no longer sufficient.
Additionally, a critical number of our transportation staff were unable to safely reach their posts due to the conditions, which would have severely impacted our ability to execute safe and timely bus routes.
Making winter weather calls is inherently tricky, especially given the size and varied conditions across the county. When assessments revealed that conditions could be unsafe for student and staff travel in any part of our district, we made the immediate, decisive call to close schools because doing the right thing for safety is our non-negotiable priority.
We remain committed to communicating status changes as early as possible, knowing that student and staff safety must always be the final determining factor.
