UPPER MARLBORO, MD – Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) will host a ribbon-cutting to celebrate the completion of the William Wirt Middle School replacement project. The $85 million replacement facility marks a significant investment in the Riverdale community, delivering a state-of-the-art learning environment with grade-level learning neighborhoods, STEAM and arts spaces, and dedicated community-use space for up to 1,200 students.
The new building replaces a 1964 facility that faced overcrowding, poor air quality, and a failing building envelope, giving Wirt students and staff a modern, welcoming place to learn.
The three-story building is organized into grade-level learning neighborhoods with collaborative learning areas. It also includes a cafeteria with a performance stage, a gymnasium, a fitness lab, a dance studio, band and choral rooms, a media center with outdoor terrace access, a STEAM and arts suite, and a video production studio. An outdoor classroom equipped with Wi-Fi and power outlets and dedicated community-use space extend learning and connection beyond the classroom.
Throughout the project, PGCPS kept the Riverdale community informed through project update meetings dating back to 2019, with presentations offered in English, Spanish, French, Arabic, Dari, and Pashto, and a live construction camera available online.
The project was designed by Crabtree, Rohrbaugh & Associates Architects and constructed by Keller Brothers, Inc., with work organized into four phases: site preparation and modular relocation, construction of the main building, demolition of the original school, and site amenities including ball fields and parking.
