Sale of 49th Student-Built House Will Help Fund House #50 and Future Student Opportunities
UPPER MARLBORO, Md. — A one-of-a-kind tiny house is looking for its first owner! Built by Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) students, the home will be showcased at an upcoming event hosted by the Foundation for Applied Construction Technology for Students (FACTS) in partnership with PGCPS.
The 49th PGCPS Student-Built House, “Homestead 24,” will be featured during a sale and auction event on Sunday, October 18, from noon to 3 p.m. at Keller Williams Preferred Properties, 1441 McCormick Drive in Upper Marlboro.
Homestead 24 marks a milestone for the long-running Student-Built House program as Prince George’s County’s first student-built tiny house. Built by PGCPS Career and Technical Education students, the 280-square-foot home includes a 204-square-foot main living area, 76-square-foot sleeping loft, full kitchen with modern appliances, full bathroom with shower and dedicated living area.
“Homestead 24 represents what’s possible when education, industry and community come together around our students,” said Raynah Adams, FACTS Board President. “This first tiny house is an exciting milestone for the program and a powerful example of the innovation and craftsmanship our students bring to every project.”
The home also features a mini-split heating and cooling system, recessed LED lighting, washer and dryer, refrigerator, shiplap interior walls, metal roofing and closed-cell spray insulation. The live auction has a minimum reserve of $55,000.
But the sale is about more than finding a buyer.
For decades, PGCPS Construction Technology students have gained hands-on experience designing and constructing full-scale homes while working alongside instructors and industry professionals. Students receive supervised experience in residential trades including framing, electrical, plumbing, HVAC and finishing.
Proceeds from the sale of the 49th house will be reinvested into the program, helping provide the land, materials, tools and other costs needed to build House #50, while also supporting scholarships, trade and vocational training and tools for students entering the workforce.
“The Student-Built House program gives students real-world experience while preparing them for careers in the construction industry,” said Pamela Smith, Director of Career and Technical Education. “The sale of Homestead 24 will help us continue investing in students and building the next generation of skilled professionals.”
The Student-Built House program is supported by the Foundation for Applied Construction Technology for Students (FACTS), a nonprofit partner of PGCPS that supports construction and building trades Career and Technical Education programs.
“Year after year, I’ve watched our students turn what they learn in the classroom into something real,” said Howard Burnett, longtime FACTS Board Member. “To see their skills, confidence and craftsmanship grow through this program is truly remarkable.”
