Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Associate Superintendent, the Director of Secondary Programs is responsible for developing, monitoring, implementing and evaluating the processes of educational options and programs that support students’ pathway to graduation and postsecondary opportunities to include oversight of Interscholastic Athletics. The incumbent of this position will collaborate with the Associate Superintendent and other district leaders regarding the oversight and management of all operations of the programs. The Director will seek innovative program approaches, evaluate programs for continued success and seek ways to expand opportunities. The Director will work on projects provided by the Associate Superintendent and will practice a collaborative approach to program implementation and growth.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provides oversight of the Non-Traditional Programs to provide a multi-pronged approach to support the implementation of instructional, social-emotional and behavioral approaches for student to ensure academic and behavioral success in and out of school;
- Provides oversight and collaborates with district partners (i.e., Academics, Instructional Technology/Student Applications) to implement the Online Campus Program in alignment with the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) requirements;
- Manages the Educational Options Program and the Evening Virtual Program to support students access to cutting edge digital learning strategies such as blended and online learning and provide credit recovery opportunities to students;
- Provides oversight and supports the implementation of the High School Summer Learning Program to support students with credit attainment and increased matriculation of students to the next grade level and graduation;
- Collaborates with central office leaders to complete the district wide Middle State Accreditation process for all high schools (comprehensive, charter and International);
- Oversees the Office of Interscholastic Athletics and ensures compliance with county, state, Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA), and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) requirements;
- Assists the Associate Superintendent in the monitoring of area goals to ensure alignment with the strategic plan’s goals and the achievement of program goals;
- Plans and implements professional development for the area, departments or district;
- Maintains a continuous improvement lens through the analysis of data;
- Implements and explores innovative strategies to improve student achievement;
- Completes projects as assigned by the Associate Superintendent;
- Fosters relationships with community arts organizations to serve and support students and their families within and outside of Prince George's County Public Schools;
- Develops and manages the department's budget; monitors expenditures with regard to instructional program maintenance, development and program improvements;
- Oversees the writing and dissemination of communication documents and maintains a healthy branding process for all programs;
- Collects and utilizes data to inform instructional decisions and monitors plans for academic interventions; coordinates proven, research-based methods and strategies for curricular reform; and
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Thorough knowledge of public school laws in Maryland and bylaws of the State Board of Education and the policies of the Board of Education of Prince George’s County;
- Thorough understanding of curriculum and instruction and other pupil related services;
- Knowledge of virtual learning programs, summer school and non-traditional pathways;
- Knowledge of interscholastic athletics for high and middle schools;
- Ability to use computer technology in an administrative and educational setting;
- Ability to work well with diverse groups of people including but not limited to central office personnel, principals, teachers, parents and students;
- Excellent organizational ability and good human relation skills;
- Excellent communication skills as well a problem solving and consensus building expertise;
- Knowledge of innovative and creative teaching with demonstrated ability to conceptualize ideas and lead and evaluate large projects; and
- Ability to support the leadership development of staff; to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a complex school system; and support secondary programming.
Education and/or Experience Requirements:
Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in curriculum and instruction, administration or a closely related field required; Doctorate degree preferred. Minimum of five (5) years of instructional experience and three (3) years of administrator experience required. Previous experience as a High School/Non-Traditional School Principal and/or central office administrator preferred.
Certification:
Maryland Advanced Professional Certificate with Administrator I and II endorsements required.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Oversees and provides guidance and direction to the unit staff.
