Position: Equipment Mechanic Foreman

Position Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Grounds Foreman II, the Equipment Mechanic Foreman oversees the repair and maintenance of various equipment related to grounds maintenance.  The incumbent of this position performs maintenance, repairs and makes adjustments to mechanical and electrical attachments to grounds equipment; troubleshoots, identifies and repairs electrical malfunctions of grounds equipment and attachments.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Oversees and performs maintenance, repairs and makes adjustments to mechanical attachments to grounds equipment; troubleshoots, identifies and repairs malfunctions of grounds equipment and attachments of equipment in addition to lawn care, excavation, concrete, asphalt and snow removal;
• Oversees and performs preventive maintenance program for ground equipment and ensures proper storage of seasonal equipment;
• Maintains inventory and provides input for equipment needs, replacement parts, requisitions and supplies;
• Maintains, repairs and adjusts a variety of grounds maintenance equipment; performs minor/major repairs on a variety of equipment;
• Provides input of specifications for replacement of equipment;
• Provides guidance and oversight to Equipment Mechanic;
• Maintains routine records related to equipment maintenance and repair activities;
• Collaborates with Central Garage to ensure proper repair of large grounds equipment; and
• Performs related work as required.

Qualifications:

• Thorough knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the repair of grounds maintenance equipment;
• Ability to diagnose and repair grounds equipment;
• Ability to maintain, repair and adjust a variety of grounds maintenance equipment;
• Knowledge of technology (computer and/or mobile devices) to enter materials, labor hours, status and details of the work done using the online work order management system;
• Knowledge of gasoline and diesel small engine repair, general repair of small maintenance equipment;
• Ability to assign and supervise the work of others;
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; and
• Knowledge of hazards of and necessary safety precautions required in the performance of grounds maintenance work.

Education and/or Experience Requirements:

High school diploma, GED or completion of a vocational school program.  A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in small engine repair and mechanical work.

Certification:

Possession of an appropriate and valid Maryland Motor Vehicle Operator’s License (commercial operator’s license Class A) with driving record indicating five (5) or fewer current points of which no more than three (3) shall have been accumulated as a result of traffic violations occurring while operating a Board of Education vehicle.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Provides guidance and oversight to Equipment Mechanic.

While performing duties of this job, the employee must have the strength and dexterity to perform all required tasks including the ability to climb a 40' vertical ladder, work from scaffolding and a bucket truck, the ability to lift and carry a minimum of 80 lbs., work in cramped interior spaces, and the ability to do extensive walking, bending, stooping, crawling and kneeling in the course of completing daily work assignments. The employee is required to maintain sustained physical effort and some exposure to dust, dirt, chemical solutions, solvents, odors, and adverse weather conditions.

Additional Information:

Deemed as essential personnel; may be required to work day, night or weekend hours to meet the operational needs of the department.
