Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Print and Mail Production Specialist, the Print and Mail Services Technician assists in coordinating, finishing, binding, packing and shipping of printed and mail materials.  The work is performed in accordance with established practices, procedures and work methods. Constant attention and review of the work in progress is required to ensure accuracy, timeline of production, and safe and efficient delivery of mail and printed material. The incumbent of this position oversees, operates, performs preventative maintenance, and repairs of printing and mail equipment. 

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Expedites control over production and keeps supervisor advised of any unusual circumstances;
  • Ensures accurate use of all equipment and systems; trains staff when necessary;
  • Oversees quality control, examines all jobs for defects such as imperfect binding, poor copy quality, loose, torn or uneven pages, etc; halts production when specifications and quality requirements are not being met;
  • Makes calls to vendors for maintenance and service for all printing, bindery and mailing equipment and maintains service log records;
  • Coordinates operations for pickup and delivery of mail and printed material;
  • Records all time and materials incidental to the various operations performed in the production of each job;
  • Performs routine clerical tasks incidental to the work, which includes creating packing labels and routing slips;
  • Adheres to and follows all safety regulations as established for the department;
  • Maintains work area to be clean, orderly and hazard free; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Considerable knowledge of all bindery, mailing and routing operations;
  • Ability to follow instructions, work under pressure and meet short deadlines;
  • Ability to coordinate routing, project schedules and quality control checks;
  • Ability to maintain records and generate reports;
  • Ability to operate remote terminal equipment and maintain records of items sent and received;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and customers;
  • Must have a high attention to detail, the ability to multitask, organize, and prioritize within a fast-paced rigorous environment;
  • Must be results oriented with a strong sense of urgency;
  • Must be a self-starter, able to work well independently, with little supervision;
  • Must work well with teams and be service-oriented; and
  • Demonstrated experience in analyzing and synthesizing information, working quickly and accurately.

Education and/or Experience Requirements:

Completion of a standard high school diploma or equivalency required.  A minimum of five (5) years of experience with printing production, complex bindery work or a closely related field, which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, required.

No direct supervisory responsibilities.

 

Physical Demands:

The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to spend prolonged periods of time standing during the operation of binding equipment while performing bindery operations. Employees in this class continually lift, carry, or otherwise handle printed material and paper stock weighing up to 40 lbs. and, occasionally, items or materials weighing up to 80 lbs. without the help of any mechanical devices, and up to 2,000 lbs. when utilizing mechanical devices such as fork-lifts or pallet-jacks. There is frequent stooping, bending, and reaching to make machine adjustments, remove misrouted materials and other operational activities. In most instances the employee is required to maintain a work pace consistent with the speed of operating machinery and/or the needs of the other workers.
