Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Supervisor of Retirement and Other Benefits, this position performs diverse and complex administrative duties to support the employee benefits function within the Office of Benefits Services. The Retirement Coordinator will provide administrative support to various benefit functions, such as, but not limited to serve as the liaison for employees wishing to retire from the Maryland State Retirement System.   The incumbent will also assist with Pre-Retirement Conferences; act as liaison with the third party administrator for tax shelter annuities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Answers questions and provides information to employees and retirees in person, by telephone, and in writing, in accordance with established departmental policies and regulations;

Processes catch-up deductions and refunds for Maryland State Retirement System pension deductions;

Provides the Retirement Agency with information such as employee work history, salary and unused sick leave balance;

Assists employees with necessary MSRS forms and literature;

Assists with organizing annual Pre-Retirement Conference;

Functions effectively as a team player within the payroll – benefits department, providing support as needed to enable the department to meet its goals and objectives;

Prepares correspondence and schedules meetings as requested by the Supervisor of Retirement and Other Benefits;

Keeps detailed and accurate records; and

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Knowledge of general office practices, procedures and equipment;

Knowledge of school system policies, and procedures;

Uses appropriate written, verbal, or electronic communication skills to disseminate information; operates a computer with speed and accuracy;

Ability to maintain confidentiality and make effective business decisions regarding with whom to discuss sensitive and confidential information;

Ability to perform routine and diversified work involving independent judgment;

Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and meet scheduled deadlines;

Ability to use business telephone, e-mail, written, and face-to-face communication techniques and etiquette; and

Proficiency with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point).

Education and/or Experience Requirements:

Graduation from high school with one to three years of progressively responsible experience in benefits, and retirement coordination.  Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred.

Certification:

The ability to obtain Retirement Coordinator Certification designation within 6 months of employment. 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

No direct supervisory responsibilities.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.
