Performs semiskilled work to assist journeyman Automotive Mechanics in the repair and maintenance of a variety of school vehicles and equipment. Employees in this class perform skilled tasks to assist in mechanical repair and maintenance of automobiles, trucks, buses and equipment. Work is performed under the supervision of mechanics/foreman. A Trades Helper is expected to perform tasks of progressively increasing difficulty within the automotive trade to progress to the level of journeyman mechanic.
High school graduate, preferably with some experience as a helper to a skilled journeyman mechanic, supplemented by completion of a recognized apprenticeship in the trade; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Possession of an appropriate and valid Maryland Motor Vehicle License with a driving record indicating five (5) or fewer current points of which no more than three (3) shall have been accumulated as a result of traffic violations occurring while operating a Board of Education vehicle. Possession of a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class "B" with endorsements "P" (Passenger) and "S" (School Bus) required or the ability to obtain within the probationary period for new employees or within 6 months of obtaining the position for current PGCPS employees; CDL Class "A" with "P" (Passenger) and "S" (School Bus and Air Brake) preferred. Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certifications are strongly encouraged.
Assists in Automotive Service Attendants training.
