Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Environmental Program Specialist, the Water Quality Inspector will test, monitor and analyze water sample results from drinking sources throughout PGCPS.  These results and associated reports are to be communicated to state and federal regulatory agencies. The incumbent of this position will also be responsible for the inspection, replacement and maintenance of water filtration systems serving drinking fountains, bottle filling stations and related potable water fixtures. The Water Quality Inspector will provide the Environmental Program Specialist with analysis and recommendations for the improvement of the overall safe drinking water program.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plans and coordinates water quality related activities (inspections, re-inspections, surveillance, management plan updates, etc.);
  • Oversees the inspections and reporting of water quality testing;
  • Conducts inspections and maintenance of all water filtration systems;
  • Performs on-site sampling of drinking sources;
  • Ensures the reliability of the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) compliance samples submitted to the state;
  • Prepares and processes all required documents related to water quality reporting;
  • Oversees the scheduling of all field work;
  • Conducts investigations relative to water quality concerns;
  • Monitors water quality activities conducted by in-house staff as well as contracted projects;
  • Prepares accurate and timely reports addressing water quality findings; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Thorough knowledge of county, state and federal water regulations;
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices involved in water quality testing;
  • Considerable knowledge of the trade and of properties, characteristics and uses of related equipment, materials and tools;
  • Ability to understand, learn and use water sampling equipment pertinent to performing assigned duties;
  • Ability to accurately assess and describe area(s) of concern to supervisors;
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, etc.);
  • Ability to prepare and present reports;
  • Ability to assign/schedule work and oversee completion; and
  • Ability to adjust work schedule when tasks effect the regular activities of a facility or requires an emergency response.

Education and/or Experience Requirements:

Completion of high school or GED with previous experience and/or training in water sampling, testing and/or inspecting required.

Certification:

Possession of an appropriate and valid Maryland Motor Vehicle Operator’s license at the time of appointment; and a driving record indicating five (5) or fewer current points, which no more than three (3) shall have accumulated as a result of traffic violations occurring while operating a Board of Education vehicle.

Maryland Water Sampler Certification preferred.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

No direct supervisory responsibilities.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.

Deemed as essential personnel; and may be required to work day, night or weekend hours to meet the operational needs of the department.
