Position: Water Treatment Technician

Position Summary:

Under general supervision, chemically tests and treats water in boilers, water towers, and other water containers to prevent or delay scale, rust, pitting, corrosion, and other damage due to impurities in the water; keeps records of containers tested and treatment rendered. An employee in this class normally performs work on a cyclic basis, thus assuring regular attention to each boiler or other water container. In addition to actually testing and treating water, an employee in this class is responsible for instructing plant equipment operations, building service manager, and building services foremen in the proper procedures to apply in testing and treating boilers and other water containers in their assigned locations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Responsible for handling various chemicals used to test water content in boilers and other containers;
• Responsible for keeping detailed records for test and treatment services rendered;
• Responsible for overseeing all boiler and water container activities;
• Responsible for providing instructions and guidance in handling plant equipment operations;
• Must ensure appropriate procedures are applied to other water containers in their assigned locations;
• Must demonstrate and instruct plant equipment operators and other responsible employees in the testing and treatment of water;
• Responsible for evaluating damage to containers caused by water impurity or related problems and to make recommendations concerning repair needs;
• Must be able to handle, mix, and apply chemicals required for the water systems; and
• Must illustrate good human-relations and communications skills.

Qualifications:

• Knowledge of the properties, characteristics, and uses of various chemicals used to test water content in boilers and other containers, and of those used in both preventive maintenance and repair of such containers;
• Ability to properly handle and apply chemicals to test and treat containers;
• Ability to keep detailed records related to services rendered;
• Ability to demonstrate and instruct plant equipment operators and other responsible employees in the testing and treatment of water;
• Ability to evaluate damage to containers caused by water impurity or related problems and to make recommendations concerning repair needs;
• Skilled in the handling, mixing, and applying chemicals common to this work, and
• Good human-relations and communications skills.

Education and/or Experience Requirements:

Completion of high school and considerable experience in chemically testing and treating water in boilers and similar water containers. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.

Certification:

Possession of a valid Maryland Class C driver’s license equivalent.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

No direct supervisory responsibilities.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.
