Media Arts

About the Program

Media Arts is the newest art form to be recognized at the national and state level. Maryland State Department of Education's definition of Media Arts is "using creative technologies for artistic purposes."

The Media Arts department is staffed with Barbara Liedahl, Instructional Specialist and also supported by Selena Ward, Technical Resource Analyst.  The Media Arts department supports teachers of the following courses: TV/Media Production I, II, III and IV, Technology Concepts, Tech, Media & Design, Elementary and Middle School Media Arts.  In addition to facilitating professional development and providing curriculum resources for Media Arts teachers, the department leads the following enrichment programs: Media Day for Middle School and High School Media Arts students in collaboration with Prince George’s Community College, held every November, and the PGCPS Annual Digital Film Festival, typically held in the spring.

To build and scale up Media Arts opportunities in ALL PGCPS schools, the Media Arts department is available to work with Elementary, Middle and High School administrators as they brainstorm bringing TV production, filmmaking and podcasting programs into their schools.  Additionally the Media Arts department is committed to bringing the maker-movement into schools through coding, computational thinking, and physical computing, with a focus on artful making in the Media Arts.

The Media Arts central office staff can conduct informal observations for tenured and non-tenured teachers to support school-based administrators.  In collaboration with other Creative and Performing Arts departments, Media Arts can also facilitate on-site workshops that further promote arts integration strategies that naturally combine media arts content standards with other content areas.
