Maryland offers several pathways to teacher licensure for individuals entering the profession through traditional and nontraditional routes. Alternative Licensure Programs, including MSDE-approved Resident Teacher programs, are designed for career changers and other qualified professionals and combine required coursework, assessments, supervised teaching experiences, mentoring, and induction support.
Other MSDE pathways may include Maryland-approved teacher preparation programs, in-district training programs, out-of-state preparation or licensure, transcript analysis, National Board Certification, and pathways for experienced nonpublic school teachers. Requirements vary depending on the certification area, educational background, experience, and pathway selected.
