The following questions and answers are related to the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights (OCR)'s investigation into the application of Title IX in PGCPS.
Answer: OCR opened the investigation after receiving a complaint from an outside organization regarding policies in several Maryland school systems. OCR is reviewing whether certain PGCPS policies and procedures comply with its current interpretation of Title IX. Opening an investigation does not mean OCR has found that PGCPS violated the law.
Answer:PGCPS has cooperated with OCR and provided the requested Board policies and administrative procedures. The district also reported that it had not identified any complaints responsive to the specific issues under investigation. PGCPS will continue responding to OCR and providing appropriate updates to the community.
Answer:The safety and well-being of students and staff remain a priority. Harassment, bullying, threats, and discriminatory conduct are not acceptable in our schools or workplaces. Anyone who experiences or witnesses a safety concern should report it promptly to a school administrator or the appropriate district office so it can be reviewed and addressed.
Answer:The investigation does not, by itself, change district policies or create new requirements. Current policies and procedures remain in effect unless PGCPS communicates otherwise. The district will carefully review any findings or guidance from OCR, evaluate applicable federal and state law, and inform families and employees of any necessary changes.
