I. Policy Statement
The Board of Education of Prince George’s County (Board) recognizes that skin cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer. The Board also acknowledges that sun safety practices that begin early in life and are consistently followed contribute to the prevention of skin cancer.
II. Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to authorize students to possess and use sunscreen on school property or at a school-sponsored activity without written permission from a health care provider.
III. Definitions
Within the context of this policy, the following definitions apply:
- Over-the-counter – Products that are sold lawfully without a
- Sunscreen – A topical product that is used to prevent the effects of overexposure to the sun and not for medical treatment of an injury or illness and is approved by the Federal Food and Drug Administration for over-the-counter use.
IV. Standards
- Students are authorized to possess and use sunscreen on school property or at a school- sponsored activity.
- Written permission from a health care provider is not required for a student to use sunscreen on school property or at a school-sponsored activity.
- Guidance will be provided to students about sun safety, the use of sunscreen, and using sunscreen on school property or at school-sponsored activities.
V. Implementation and Responsibilities
The Chief Executive Officer is authorized to develop an administrative procedure consistent with this policy.
