Social Media Threat

September 20, 2024

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I am writing to inform you about an incident involving William Wirt Middle School on Thursday, September 19, 2024. We received information about a threat of violence made by a student. The PGCPS Department of Security Services collaborated with the Prince George’s County Police Department (PGPD) and its Homeland Security Division to investigate the matter. During their investigation, detectives determined the suspect did not have the means to carry out the threats.

The Maryland Center for School Safety has made us aware that the incidents appear to be part of a disturbing national trend involving dangerous social media posts that have gained attention over the past few weeks.  Providing students with a safe and orderly environment is our top priority. Prince George’s County Public Schools takes any threat against students, schools, and employees seriously.

Please set aside time to discuss this incident with your child. Remind them of the severe consequences that can result from threats of school violence.  Any student who threatens violence against a school can face not only expulsion but criminal charges as well.  Please encourage your child to report social media threats or suspicious objects on school grounds to a staff member or trusted adult.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at (301) 985-1720 or rhonda.simley@pgcps.org.

Thank you for your continued support.
 Sincerely,

Rhonda Simley
