Prince George’s County Public Schools proudly celebrates LaShawn James, recently named “Pupil Personnel Worker (PPW) of the Year” by the Maryland Association of Pupil Personnel (MAPP). The award, announced at MAPP’s annual conference on April 30, honors her outstanding service and dedication to students and families.
With 31 years in education, including 17 as a PPW, James currently serves Eleanor Roosevelt High School, Robert Frost Elementary School, and Legends Charter School. A PGCPS graduate herself, she describes the work as deeply personal.
“It was important to me to return to the county and begin my career in education,” James said. “Pupil Personnel Services has been the most rewarding. It allows me to advocate for students and families while helping remove barriers to learning and development.”
In 2021, NBC4 featured James during home visits aimed at reconnecting with students after the COVID-19 pandemic. A former parent recognized her and posted online, “She really does care!”—a powerful reminder of the lasting impact PPWs have.
James calls the award an honor and a reflection of the vital work Pupil Personnel Workers do throughout Maryland.
Congratulations, LaShawn, and thank you for being a champion for students and families!
