PGCPS celebrated National School Breakfast Week, a nationwide initiative that highlights the important role school breakfast plays in student achievement, health and overall well being. This year, the district partnered with Maryland Hunger Solutions to participate in the statewide “Hear the Crunch” initiative, a fun and engaging way to spotlight the value of the School Breakfast Program.
On March 5, Springhill Lake Elementary School welcomed partners from the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) and Maryland Hunger Solutions for a special “Hear the Crunch” celebration. During the event, the entire school community took a synchronized bite into fresh apples, creating one big, joyful crunch that symbolized how school breakfast helps ensure every child begins the day nourished and ready to learn.
Students and staff added to the excitement by dressing up as fruits and vegetables, including apples, strawberries, bananas, grapes and avocados, creating a festive atmosphere that highlighted the importance of healthy choices.
Recognized as one of the district’s Healthy Schools, Springhill Lake Elementary models strong nutrition practices and student wellness initiatives that support both academic success and lifelong healthy habits. Students across PGCPS also joined the celebration by enjoying apples as the featured fruit option during breakfast.
During a visit to a prekindergarten classroom, students eagerly prepared to take their first bite of the morning apple. When asked how it tasted, the room quickly filled with enthusiastic responses. “Juicy!” one student said, while another happily shouted, “Good!”
“All students should take part in school breakfast,” said Mary Kirkland, Director of Food and Nutrition Services for PGCPS. “It provides a nutritious meal at the beginning of the day and ensures students are well fueled and ready to start their day of learning.”
National School Breakfast Week is about more than what is on the tray. It is about equity, access and opportunity. By ensuring students have a healthy start each morning, PGCPS continues its commitment to creating school environments where every child can succeed.
