At Northview Elementary School in Bowie, students planted native trees during Earth Week, transforming their campus into the launch site for new district and statewide efforts.
The event marked the debut of Prince George’s County Public Schools’ (PGCPS) new Tree Planting Program and Maryland Schoolyard Forests Program — with the district selected to lead the rollout.

Spearheaded by the PGCPS Office of Sustainability & Resilience, the district’s Tree Planting Program is supported by the Maryland Schoolyard Forests Program, which is also part of the larger Maryland 5 Million Trees initiative.
Interim Superintendent Dr. Shawn Joseph delivered a keynote address reminding us that PGCPS isn't just participating in the green movement – we are leading it! Our comprehensive Climate Change Action Plan outlines actions and investments in green infrastructure, waste reduction, composting, and recycling, and we have the highest number – 154 – of Green Schools in the state.
“Northview Elementary is an outstanding example of how schools can cultivate a generation that respects, understands, and protects our environment," said Dr. Joseph. “From composting and recycling programs to award-winning energy initiatives, this school has demonstrated what it means to lead with purpose. Your recognitions – from Green School certifications to state and national energy awards – reflect a commitment to stewardship and innovation.”

Students’ efforts on April 20 didn't stop at the school gates – through a generous donation from DNR, they left the tree-planting event with their very own sapling to plant at home, extending this green space initiative throughout the entire community.
